Tonsil Removal

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

The surgical removal of tonsils is referred to as tonsillectomy. There are certain criteria which decide whether the tonsils should be removed or not:

  • Whenever the tonsils get so enlarged that they start obstructing the process of swallowing, breathing or both.
  • It also becomes important when your child gets repeated infection
  • The infection causes high fever, head ache and tender lymph nodes etc.

If at all any of these condition arises your child should have the tonsils removed. Typically the average cost of the tonsil removal would be approximately around $4000. This cost should include the doctor’s cost for the pre-surgery visit, the patient’s admission in the hospital, cost of anesthesia and surgical removal of the tonsil tissue. You should ensure that this cost should also include the follow up visits after the surgery for around one month.

Besides this you should also calculate the additional costs involved which would mainly include pain medications and antibiotics after the surgery. Before you go in for a decision of removing the tonsils, you should make sure that you have done your homework well. You should consult your family doctor and find the surgeon who would be handling your case.

Once you and your doctor have decided depending upon on your condition, you should go ahead with the decision of tonsil removal.
